Highlight of North Kathmandu: Reconstruction

After the devastating earthquake on Baisakh 12, 2072 estimated 7,000 households of North Kathmandu were severely affected through injuries, deaths and destructions of buildings. Since rehabilitation had become a necessity at that time of emergency for the affected households, North Kathmandu Reconstruction Project was initiated. In this project, NK 2020 team mobilized around 100 volunteers for one month to construct four community shelters which rehabilitated 15 families. Most of the construction process utilized  local resources like bamboo, wood and clay. The tin material used in construction process were as donation from different organizations. A volunteers requisition form was created to assess the needs of the residents. Tasks were identified and a plan sheet was made. Even though most of the volunteers were students,  their dedication was extraordinary and gave great determination & hard work leading towards successful completion of the work ( building community shelters) and result was very satisfying.

First reconstruction was initiated at Dhital Thok for the four families which ended with building two shelters in three days. Locals people were there to guide the volunteers. Next reconstruction was done at Aryaltar where we built community shelter for four families. The families were originally residents of Kumaltar but earthquake  destroyed  their houses completely requiring them to migrate to Aryaltar. The reconstruction process at Aryaltar was completed in 10 days. Local people guided us and even gave helping hands for total completion of community shelter, we were also able to reuse woods and tins from destroyed houses while building the community shelter.

Another two community shelters were built at Kumaltar which took seven days for volunteers to complete. AT this location volunteers mostly worked as helping hands transporting materials and digging the ground to help the  overall  construction effort which was led by  skilled workers. Our team and locals supported those skilled people with our full efforts.
